A practical guide to the difference between nutrient grams and the food on your plate.

Protein

7 grams per block

That is nutrient protein, not seven grams of the food itself. Use the protein value for the same serving size you enter.

Carbohydrate

9 grams per block

The Zone convention uses total carbohydrate minus fiber when fiber is included in that total. The calculator expects you to supply the applicable value.

Fat

Understand the convention.

The existing calculator uses 1.5 grams per added-fat block. Zone Living distinguishes 1.5 grams with animal protein from 3 grams with vegetarian protein. The tool does not switch between these conventions.

Food measurements

Keep your units consistent.

Enter serving weight in grams. Choose grams or ounces for the portion result. A volume measure, such as a cup, is not interchangeable with a weight.

Read the same serving all the way through.

  1. Find the serving weight in grams.
  2. Find nutrient grams for that exact serving.
  3. Choose the matching nutrient section in the calculator.
  4. Read the result in your selected unit and remember that the original tool rounds portions.

Build a reliable food reference.

Check the package label or a reliable food-composition source for the specific food and preparation. Raw, cooked and drained versions can differ. USDA FoodData Central is one place to look up documented food records.

The food calculator’s search retains the existing application’s records. A fuller searchable guide can be added once its source data has been reviewed; this page does not invent common-food portions.
